Which realm type?
It occurs to me that considering I am currently dedicating my life to World of Warcraft even though it isn’t out in Europe yet, I may as well spend some quality time writing some articles and guides. This one happens to be on realm types.

There are basically three different types of realm types. You have to pick a realm when creating your character and unfortunately you cannot switch between them so pick wisely.

In recent polls I have seen, player vs. player servers have been the most popular although with the introductions of battle grounds you can now make a strong case for normal servers as being the best.

Normal Servers
These realms are well, normal. They are the stand servers in which you do PvE (player vs. environment, basically fighting computer people). In this case you are pretty safe from just randomly being attacked unless of course you want to be. Generally there is little PvP combat as standard.

However if you want PvP combat then you can have it – attacking an NPC of an opposing faction, attacking a player who attacks an NPC, aiding a player engaged in PvP and entering an enemy city are all great ways to get some player on player action.

You can also enable PvP if you want using the slash command /pvp. Any of these methods including the slash command enable combat for five minutes so you have a fair bit of time to get a battle if you are looking for one without players who do not want one to hide away for a while.

Blizzard is also quite deep in development of battlegrounds. These are designated battle grounds that you can enter at will and basically it will be a large place like a valley and each faction gets a base. You then engage in massive faction battles which sounds awesome.

Considering you can enable PvP if you want and battlegrounds are well under development (to the point where Blizzard has been running large scale tests) I would say that normal servers now have a strong case for being the best. My advice is that if you don’t strongly want the features of the other realm types, go for this.

Player vs. Player servers
These have become pretty popular and allow basically random attacking. Although it is not totally like that so you can be safe in some areas. Each zone on the map is one of three modes – Alliance, contested or Horde.

If you are Alliance, you are safe in Alliance controlled zones unless you choose to attack. It is the same for the Horde and Horde controlled zones. In contested zones anyone can attack anyone.

PvP realms have that extra bit of danger as you could always end up getting killed when not in your own factions zone plus you get to fight other people. It isn’t so fun when a level 50 character comes and kills you and all your friends because even all 6 of you level 25’s don’t stand a chance.

But then that is the risk you take. I considered a player vs. player realm although with battlegrounds there isn’t a huge advantage. If you are only playing the game for combat though, this is the realm type for you.

Role-playing servers
Finally we come to the RP servers for those who like to lose themselves in their character. If anything you should be able to avoid the annoying 12 year olds that plague the regular games. There is a role playing policy you have to follow but if this is your thing, then defiantly go for the role playing realms - CassieNet World of Warcraft.
