The Shawshank Redemption
A powerhouse of a movie. Having just watched it I realise I am still biased by what the immediate sensations of the movie. But I believe even this firm conviction is something I will stick by in times to come.
I found myself fixed on the movie. Suddenly coming round to realise my breathing was slow and deep as if lying in silence. The film is often hailed as a “modern classic.” It isn’t groundbreaking but it was one thing – a damn good film. As a trivia point it took 3rd in Channel 4’s 100 greatest films ever, beaten only by the Godfather and Star Wars.
Adapted from a Stephen King novel, the film centres around Andy (Tim Robbins) a banker convicted of two murders arriving at Shawshank prison where he meets up with “Red” (Morgan Freeman). It tells of Andy’s story on the inside, a chilling cold tale but with a happy ending – a two and a half hour epic.
The ending left me wondering how far they were going to drag it out. Not that it was boringly dragged out but ending it with Red beginning his journey would have been equally fitting. The only other accusation that can easily be made out of the movie is Andy’s story is a little unbelievable – it all comes together a little too perfect.
It can be forgiven for such a happy ending however – with conditions as they were and the cold reality the film portrays it’s nice to know that hope still existed. A superb fusion of the reality of prison circa 1950 and a heart warming family classic storyline if a little buried underneath - Emo Movies.
